Using your Google Account for YouTube
If you’ve signed into any of these products before, you already have a Google Account. To sign in, enter the email address you entered on those products (if you use Gmail, it’s your Gmail username). If you don’t have a Google Account, you can create one on YouTube.
Here are a few important things to remember about Google Accounts and YouTube:
- You sign into YouTube with your Google Account. To sign in to YouTube, enter your Google Account email and password. After signing up for YouTube, if you sign in to your Google Account on another Google service, you’ll be automatically signed in when you visit YouTube.
- Deleting your Google Account will delete your YouTube data, including all videos, comments, and subscriptions. Before you can delete your Google Account, you will have to confirm that you understand that you’re permanently deleting your data on all Google services, including YouTube.
Create an account on YouTube
Create a Google Account to sign in to YouTube:
Touch the Menu and go to Sign in. Touch Add account and then go to New to create your Google Account.
- Click Sign in in the upper right corner of YouTube.
- Click Create Account.
- In a browser, go to the YouTube mobile site.
- Touch the Guide and go to Sign in.
- Select Create an account.
It currently isn’t possible to create a Google Account in the YouTube iOS app. However, you can follow the instructions to create a Google Account on the mobile site.
With a Google Account, you can access many YouTube features, including Like, Subscribe, Watch Later, and Watch History. YouTube can also recommend videos based on what you’ve watched, liked, and subscribed to.
To upload videos, leave comments, or create playlists, you can create a channel on your account.
Use YouTube with your Google Account
When you sign into YouTube with your Google Account, you can take advantage of many YouTube features:
- Like videos
- Save Favorites
- Subscribe to channels
- Watch Later
- Watch History
- Flag videos
YouTube will also be able to personalize video recommendations based on the videos you’ve liked and watched and your subscriptions.
Unless you create a channel, you won’t have a public presence on YouTube. Your activity is fully private. If you’d like to upload your own videos, comment on videos, or create playlists, you can create a YouTube Channel at any time.
Create a new channel
With just a Google Account, you can watch, like, and subscribe. Google Accounts don’t come with a YouTube channel by default; without a channel, you have no public presence on YouTube.
To upload, comment, or make playlists, create a public YouTube channel. Currently this can’t be done in the Android or iOS YouTube apps, but you can use the mobile site or a computer:
- Make sure you’re signed in to YouTube.
- Go to create a channel (if you already have a channel, the link will take you to it).
- Check the details and click OK to create your new channel.
- Make sure you’re signed in to YouTube.
- Go to All my channels.
- If you want to make a YouTube channel for a Google+ page that you manage, you can choose it here. Otherwise, click Create a new channel.
- Fill out the details to create your new channel.
Verify your account by phone
Once you’ve verified your account, you will be able to upload videos longer than 15 minutes, as long as your account is in good standing.
You may also be asked to verify your account when signing up.
Why does YouTube ask for my phone number?
We take spam and abuse very seriously. Using phones to verify identity is one way to protect our community and combat abuse.
YouTube will only use your phone number to send you a verification code and to check that it is not being used on a large number of accounts. We will not use your phone number in any other way.
I entered my phone number but I haven’t received the code
Usually you’ll receive the code immediately. If you haven’t, you can request a new code. Check to see that you’re not running into one of these common problems:
- Some countries and carriers do not support text messages from Google. Most mobile carriers support text messages from Google. If your carrier does not support text messages from Google, you can try the voice call option, or use a different phone number.
- There are too many accounts with the same phone number. If you see the error message, “This phone number has already created the maximum number of accounts,” you’ll have to use a different number. To help prevent abuse, we limit the number of accounts that can be associated with each phone number.
