Your email address and phone number
Often the best connections on Twitter are with people you know and care about. In order to help you make those connections, we use information like your email address and/or phone number to make your account discoverable to others. By default your account settings allow this, but you can adjust them at any time (read below).
How would others find me by my email address or phone number?
If someone has your email address or phone number in their contacts, they may find your account when they upload those contacts to Twitter. Twitter may also suggest your account as a “who to follow” suggestion if your email address or phone number is included in the contacts that others have uploaded.
People may also find your account through third-party services that have integrated with Twitter. For example, when people receive emails from you on email services that have integrated with Twitter, they may see your Twitter profile and Tweets. This helps people you may know keep in touch better with what you care about on Twitter.
To turn off the setting that lets others find you by your email address or phone number:
On the web:
- Log in to twitter.com and navigate to your Security and privacy settings page.
- Next to the Discoverability section, you’ll see the following options:
- Let others find me by my email address
- Let others find me by my phone number
- Uncheck one or both options.
- Click Save changes.
Using Twitter for iOS:
- From the Me tab, tap the gear icon
- Tap Settings.
- Tap the account you’d like to adjust.
- Under Privacy, you can adjust your settings to Let others find me by my email address and Let others find me by my phone number.
Using Twitter for Android:
- Tap the overflow icon
- Tap Settings.
- Tap the account you’d like to adjust.
- Under Other, you can adjust your settings to allow others to Find by email or Find by phone.
Will my email address or phone number be publicly displayed on Twitter?
No, your email address and phone number are not publicly displayed on Twitter, even if you have not turned off the setting that lets others find you by your email address or phone number.
How is my email address or phone number used when third parties integrate with Twitter?
To let people on third-party services that have integrated with Twitter find your Twitter account, these third-party services may send your email address or phone number to Twitter. If you have a Twitter account associated with this email address or phone number and you have not turned off the setting that lets others find you by your email address or phone number, Twitter may share your Twitter account with people through this third party service. For example, when people compose emails to you on email services that have integrated with Twitter, they may see your Twitter profile and your Tweets.
Your email address and phone number are not directly shared with third parties when your settings allow others to discover you. The settings let people that already have your email address or phone number find you on Twitter or on third-party services that have integrated with Twitter.
If you don’t want others to find your Twitter account based on your email address or phone number, you can turn this feature off, as described above.
