Installing or Updating Instagram

Learn how to troubleshoot problems installing or updating Instagram

I’m getting a “Device not compatible” error message in Google Play Store

We’re aware of an issue where some people get a “Device not compatible” error message in the Google Play Store when trying to download Instagram, even though Instagram should support the phone. Google is currently investigating this issue with Google Play Store.

As a temporary workaround, Google suggests clearing Google Play Store’s data from your phone and then trying to install Instagram. To do this, go to Settings > Application Manager > All > Google Play Store > Clear data.

If this workaround doesn’t resolve your problem, please let us know.

App Store says Instagram is installed but it isn’t on my phone (Apple iOS)

If you’re trying to update or re-install Instagram and you can’t tap the App Store “Install” btn or it’s grayed out, try connecting your phone to your computer and syncing your apps via iTunes.

If these troubleshooting steps don’t help, please get in touch with Apple support.

My iPhone or iPad is stuck on the Apple reboot screen

When installing a new update from the App Store, Apple’s updating process may sometimes reboot your phone and send it through a cleanup process which can take a while to run. The longest we’ve seen it take is 30 minutes or so. The installing/rebooting process is out of Instagram’s control.

If you’ve waited for your phone to reboot but it’s still not working, you may want to:

  • Wait until it runs out of battery, plug it into a charger and then try turning it on again
  • Plug your phone into a computer and then restart the computer
  • Try unplugging and re-plugging your phone

If these troubleshooting steps don’t help, please get in touch with Apple support.

Instagram takes up too much space on my phone

Apple iOS

The more you use an app, the more space the app takes up on your phone. If you use Instagram more than other apps, it’ll likely take up more space on your phone than apps you don’t use as often. However, your phone automatically resets the storage space an app uses every week, so you don’t need to worry about storage for any app becoming gradually larger over time.

If you want to manually decrease the amount of space Instagram takes up, you can delete and reinstall the app. Your photos and profile data will be saved.

On iOS, you can find out how much space Instagram takes up on your phone by opening the Settings and tapping General > Usage and finding Instagram in the Storage section.

Android

The Android app may take up more internal memory than other apps on your phone because we cache photos. This makes the Instagram experience faster for you and conserves bandwidth, which means you don’t have to re-download photos over your carrier’s network. Keep in mind that as of v1.0.3, you can install the app on your phone’s SD card.

On Android, you can find out how much space Instagram takes up on your phone by following these steps:

  1. Leave the Instagram app
  2. Open the Settings on your phone > Applications > Manage applications > Instagram
  3. Total Storage will be shown on the Instagram screen

If you choose Clear data, your download cache will be cleared. Clear cache will reset the memory for the app.

The Instagram update is stuck on “Installing” on my phone (Apple iOS)

If you’re trying to install or update Instagram and the app is stuck on “Installing,” first try turning your phone off and then back on:

  1. Press and hold the btn at the top of your phone until the red slider appears
  2. Slide the red power btn to turn off your phone
  3. Wait about 30 seconds, and then press and hold the top btn again to turn your phone back on

After you restart your phone, try installing the Instagram app again. Some people have reported that syncing their phone with iTunes and reinstalling Instagram from iTunes helps with this process.

If these troubleshooting steps don’t help, please contact Apple support.

My phone or tablet isn’t supported

Android

You can run Instagram on any camera phone with Android 2.2 or later with support for OpenGL ES 2, as well as tablets with support for OpenGL ES 2.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Phones without OpenGL ES 2, like the first generation HTC Wildfire, can’t power Instagram’s filters and can’t be supported.
  • Phones running Android older than 2.2 can’t power Instagram’s filters.
  • There’s a known issue with some Samsung Galaxy Y phones that causes posts to appear black on the filters screen and when it’s uploaded. We’re currently looking into this issue.

If you believe your phone should be compatible with Instagram, please let us know.

Apple iOS

Instagram v2.0 and later versions are supported on iOS 4.2.1 and later. If you’re not running this version of iOS or later, you’ll continue to see the old version of Instagram.

You can find your iOS version by opening your Settings and then tapping General > About.

I can’t download Instagram on my iPhone (iOS6)

If you’re using iOS6 or earlier on your iPhone, you won’t be able to download Instagram from the App Store on your phone.

To continue using Instagram on your iPhone, download the app on your computer and then connect your phone to your computer. You’ll then be able to download the latest version of Instagram that’s compatible with iOS6.

Another way to continue using Instagram on your iPhone is to upgrade your phone’s software.

$0.45 USD - $4.00 USD

Note: The accepted formula that Auxiliary Mode Inc. uses to calculate the CPM range is $0.45 USD - $25.00 USD.

The range fluctuates this much because many factors come into play when calculating a CPM. Quality of traffic, source country, niche type of video, price of specific ads, adblock, the actual click rate, watch time and etc.

Cost per thousand (CPM) is a marketing term used to denote the price of 1,000 advertisement impressions on one webpage. If a website publisher charges $2.00CPM, that means an advertiser must pay $2.00 for every 1,000 impressions of its ad. The "M" in CPM represents the Roman numeral for 1,000.
