Terms of Service Updates

YouTube has updated its Terms of Service to improve clarity and reflect changes in how the platform operates. These updates apply in the U.S. starting November 2020 and in other regions starting June 1, 2021.

Why These Changes Were Made

YouTube updates its Terms regularly to:

  • Make rules easier to understand
  • Support creators, viewers, and advertisers
  • Be transparent about how the platform works

This update explains how YouTube handles ads, data use, and payments.

Key Updates

Facial Recognition Data

The Terms now clearly state that collecting facial recognition data without permission is not allowed. This was already restricted before, but is now stated more clearly.

YouTube’s Right to Show Ads

YouTube may show ads on some videos, even if a channel is not yet in the YouTube Partner Program.
However, creators only earn money from ads after meeting eligibility requirements and joining the program.

Payments and Taxes

  • Payments from YouTube are now treated as royalties (for tax purposes)
  • Google may withhold taxes when required by law
  • Creators may need to submit tax information depending on their country

How This Affects Monetization

  • These changes do not affect current YouTube Partner Program settings
  • Monetization rules for YPP creators stay the same
  • Some creators may see ads even before they are eligible to earn revenue

Privacy and Data

There are no changes to how YouTube handles personal data.

You can still:

  • Review privacy settings
  • Manage data and personalization
  • Check Google’s Privacy Policy for details

These updates are not related to GDPR or EU copyright laws.
