Advertiser-Friendly Content Updates

This page shows recent and upcoming changes to YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines. These updates help determine what content can earn ad revenue.

Latest Updates (Past 3 Months)

March 2026 — Shocking Content Rules

Videos showing distress, gore, or shock (including content involving young-looking characters or bodies) are no longer eligible for ads.

February 2026 — Firearm Content Update

Content showing 30-round magazines (attached or separate) can now earn ad revenue. The previous limit was 29 rounds.

January 2026 — Controversial Topics

Videos about controversial topics can now earn ads if they are non-graphic and clearly fictional or dramatized. However, content focused on child abuse or eating disorders is still not eligible for full monetization.

Past Updates

2025 — Language Rules

Stronger profanity (like the f-word) is now allowed earlier in videos and may still earn ad revenue.

2024 — Policy Changes

  • Adult content rules now include restrictions on AI-generated sexual content
  • Clearer rules added for misinformation about elections and public processes
  • More examples added to help explain profanity and violent content rules

2023 — Major Updates

  • Some adult themes like breastfeeding content and non-sexual dancing may now earn ads
  • More flexibility added for discussing topics like abortion or sexual abuse in a non-graphic way
  • Changes to profanity rules and how it affects monetization

2022 — Clarifications

  • More examples added for violence, adult content, and harmful acts
  • Clearer rules for “made for kids” content and gaming videos
  • Updates to policies around drugs, dangerous behavior, and misinformation

Important Notes

  • Some updates are policy changes, while others are just clarifications.
  • Not all content will be reviewed manually; systems are partly automated.
  • Even if content follows rules, monetization is not guaranteed.

Why These Updates Exist

These guidelines help ensure that ads appear next to content that is safe and appropriate for advertisers, viewers, and the platform overall.
