Receiving SMS notifications for Tweets and interactions

Turning on notifications via the web

  1. Got to your Settings page.
  2. Click the Mobile tab.
  3. Check the boxes next to Text notifications for each type of notification you would like enabled for your device.
  4. For some options, you can select the Only from people I follow option, or choose to have any Interaction sent to your phone by selecting From anyone.

Turning on notifications via SMS

@replies/mentions or DM notifications:

  • If you only want to receive notifications of mentions made by accounts you are following, send set mentions on to your short code.
  • If you’d like to receive notifications about other users who mention your username (potentially even users who you are not following) send set mentions all to your short code.
  • To turn all mention notifications off, send set mentions off to your short code.
  • To turn direct message notifications on, send set messages on to your short code.
  • To turn DM notifications off, send set messages off to your short code.

Interaction notifications:

  • Send set followers on to your short code if you want to receive notifications for new followers.
  • To turn follower notifications off, send set followers off to your short code.
  • If you want to receive notifications when someone you follow marks your Tweet as a favorite, send set favorites on to your short code.
  • If you’d like to know when other users favorite your Tweets (potentially even users who you are not following) send set favorites all to your short code.
  • To turn all favorites notifications off, send set favorites off to your short code.
  • If you want to receive notifications when someone you follow retweets one of your Tweets, send set Retweets on to your short code.
  • If you’d like to get notifications when other users retweet your Tweets (potentially even users who you are not following) send set Retweets all to your short code.
  • To turn all retweet notifications off, send set Retweets off to your short code.

Turning on Tweet notifications from a specific person

Via the web:

  1. Visit your Settings page.
  2. Click the Mobile tab.
  3. Look for the area labeled Text notifications.
  4. Check the box for Tweets from people you’ve enabled for mobile notifications to receive text message notifications any time a specific person Tweets.
  5. Visit the profile page or click on the username of the user whose updates you want to receive via SMS (try typing https://twitter.com/username in your browser’s URL bar, or click through from your following page).
  6. Click the person icon on the user’s profile and select Turn on mobile notifications from the drop-down menu.
  7. If you no longer wish to receive text message updates from this user, select Turn off mobile notifications, from the same drop-down menu.


Note: People with protected Tweets must approve you as a follower before you can choose to receive their updates on your phone.

Via SMS:

  • Send ON [username] (without quotes, brackets, or the @ symbol) to your short code.
  • For example, to get @Support’s Tweets sent to your mobile phone in the US, send ON Support to 40404.

Turning all Twitter SMS updates on or off

Via the web:

  • Make sure all the boxes in the section Text notifications in your Mobile settings are unchecked.

Via SMS:

  • Send OFF to your short code to turn all notifications off.
  • You can turn them back on by sending ON to your short code.
