A YouTube copyright claim is generated when Content ID detects copyrighted material in an uploaded video. Unlike a copyright strike, a Content ID claim generally does not negatively affect your channel’s standing.
However, a claim can affect your video in several ways, including redirecting ad revenue to the copyright owner, limiting availability in certain regions, or blocking the video entirely.
How to Resolve a Copyright Claim
- Trim the segment: Remove the portion of the video containing the claimed material.
- Replace the song: Swap the copyrighted music with an eligible track from YouTube’s Audio Library.
- Erase the song: Remove or mute the claimed music while preserving other audio, such as dialogue, when possible.
- Dispute the claim: Submit a dispute through YouTube Studio if you own the content, have permission or a valid license, or believe your use qualifies for a copyright exception such as fair use.
