YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts is YouTube’s short-form video experience, designed to help creators produce engaging vertical videos and reach audiences through the Shorts feed.

1. Creating YouTube Shorts

Creators can make Shorts directly in the YouTube mobile app or upload compatible videos.

Creation Tools

  • Multi-clip recording: Combine multiple clips into a single Short.
  • Music and sounds: Add eligible songs and audio through YouTube’s sound library.
  • Creative tools: Use filters, effects, green screen, speed controls, timers, and other editing features.
  • Captions and text: Add captions and on-screen text to improve accessibility and engagement.

2. Optimizing Your Shorts

To improve performance and keep viewers watching:

  • Start with a strong hook: Capture attention immediately to reduce viewers swiping away.
  • Keep the pacing engaging: Remove unnecessary pauses and get to the main point quickly.
  • Encourage repeat viewing: Smooth transitions or looping edits can increase replays.
  • Use compelling titles: Write concise titles that clearly communicate what the Short is about.
  • Optimize for mobile: Vertical video generally provides the best full-screen Shorts experience.

3. Shorts Monetization

Eligible creators can earn money from Shorts through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

Revenue Opportunities

  • Shorts Feed ad revenue: Eligible creators receive a share of revenue generated from ads displayed between Shorts.
  • YouTube Premium: Creators may receive revenue when Premium subscribers watch their Shorts.
  • Fan funding: Eligible channels may have access to features such as Super Thanks and Channel Memberships.
  • Other opportunities: Creators can also generate revenue through sponsorships, brand partnerships, and other eligible YouTube monetization features.

YouTube uses a pooled revenue-sharing model for Shorts Feed ads, with eligible creators receiving 45% of the revenue allocated to them.

4. Shorts Analytics

YouTube Studio provides performance data to help creators understand how their Shorts are performing.

Important Metrics

  • Viewed vs. swiped away: Shows how often viewers choose to watch rather than move to the next Short.
  • Average percentage viewed: Measures how much of the Short viewers watch on average.
  • Audience retention: Identifies where viewers continue watching or drop off.
  • Views and engagement: Track views, likes, comments, shares, and subscriber growth.

Successful YouTube Shorts combine strong opening hooks, engaging content, mobile-friendly presentation, and consistent performance analysis. Reviewing Shorts analytics regularly can help creators identify what resonates with their audience and refine future content.
