What is a YouTube Claim?
Within YouTube’s rights management system, a claim is an assertion that a copyright owner has rights to content appearing in a video.
Claims can apply to videos uploaded by channels linked to your Content Manager or to videos uploaded by other YouTube users that match your copyrighted assets. When Content ID detects a match, it creates a claim and applies the asset’s designated policy, such as monetizing, tracking, or blocking the video.
In Studio Content Manager, claims are organized by individual video, allowing you to review and manage all claims associated with a video in one place.
Partners should ensure that claims are accurate. Abusive, incorrect, or fraudulent claims can lead to penalties, including legal liability or termination of the YouTube partnership.
Sources of Claims
- Partner-uploaded videos: These are videos uploaded by channels connected to your Content Manager. A claim is created when the video is uploaded and the appropriate upload policy is applied.
- Claiming partner-uploaded content enables monetization, Content ID matching, and reporting features.
- Partner-uploaded Shorts are also scanned by Content ID and may receive a “first-party match” claim when music content is identified.
- User-generated content (UGC): These are videos uploaded by other YouTube users.
- If Content ID detects your copyrighted material in another user’s video, a claim may be created and your match policy is applied. This policy determines whether YouTube will monetize, track, or block the matched video.
