Multi-Channel Networks (MCNs) are third-party companies that work with multiple YouTube channels and provide services designed to support creators and manage their content.
Services MCNs May Provide
Depending on the network, services can include:
- Audience growth and development
- Content programming and strategy
- Creator collaborations
- Digital rights management
- Monetization support
- Advertising and sales
Channels affiliated with an MCN must still undergo YouTube’s review process and comply with YouTube’s monetization policies.
Affiliate vs. Owned & Operated Channels
MCNs generally work with two types of channels:
- Affiliate channels: Managed by the MCN at scale and connected to an Affiliate Content Owner.
- Owned & Operated (O&O) channels: Channels that the partner owns and actively operates. The partner must have exclusive rights to the channel’s YouTube content and typically handles day-to-day activities such as uploading and managing videos.
This distinction helps YouTube apply the appropriate policies, rights-management tools, and channel features.
Before Joining an MCN
Joining an MCN is an important business decision. Before signing an agreement, creators should understand:
- What services the MCN will provide
- Fees and revenue-sharing arrangements
- When and how payments will be distributed
- Contract duration and termination terms
- What protections exist if payments are late or incorrect
- What rights or control the MCN receives over the channel and its content
Important to Know
MCNs and other third-party service providers are not automatically endorsed by YouTube or Google. YouTube does maintain a Creator Services Directory that includes YouTube Certified service providers.
